Fairy Tale Romance is a modern day retelling of Beauty and the Beast with Cinderella, Snow White, and Little Red Riding Hood intercut into the story to enhance some of the fairy tale qualities of the story. Yes, it is made with Barbie dolls.

While I have always considered this film to be a romantic comedy, it has won awards for being experimental. It won Best Experimental at the 2006 Bowling Green State University Film and Media Festival. It also won Best Experimental at the 2007 Pumelo International Film Festival in Mumbai, India. It actually showed in India with films like Broken Flowers starring Bill Murray.

In a way, this is the most autobiographical film of my career. This film has ties to Thursday and was written about a certain girl who complained that I hadn't written anything about her. She was originally cast in the lead, since this was meant to be a live action film. Since a rift happened, I was left with a script about a girl that I was no longer speaking to. I decided that I could replace her with a Barbie doll. I wasn't going to waste a perfectly good script.

If I have never recorded a commentary track for this film, it is because what this film means is different depending on what job you are talking to me about. As a writer, this script is about a girl that I was in love with. As a director, it is about a man getting over a break-up. As an editor, I had to reconcile these two and try to make peace with everything to where I was actually telling a story. This situation made it extremely difficult to do a commentary track.

In a way, this film is the perfect vehicle for somebody who was at where I was at several points during its production. It is the story of a guy that has been hurt by a love and how he learns to love again. Several people have commented that it is the perfect movie regardless of your relationship status. It's a good date movie, but it is also a good movie if you are single. I can only attribute that to the fact that I was going through a lot of emotional stuff with this film. So in addition to the story being autobiographical to begin with, the subject matter of getting over a break-up and a broken heart was something that I was actually going through during the filming.

You can find this on DVD on Amazon. It is also available on Amazon as a download to own or a download to rent.
